Mines Safety
A safe worker is a motivated worker. Safety in the working condition encourages for more productivity and self confidence among the workers.
Mines are classified into two categories (a) Coal & (b) Non-coal (Metal). GMDC is mining Lignite, Bauxite, Fluorspar, silica sand etc. Mining of coal & lignite is regulated by Coal Mines Regulations 1957. Whereas other minerals like Fluorspar, Bauxite etc. by the Metalliferous Mines Regulations 1961.
The Corporation has highly qualified mining engineers & mine managers for effective planning, supervision, control, management & directions to all the mining projects as per the stipulated norms of the Mines Act 1952. All safety norms are maintained. Modern protective appliances (Safety shoes, helmet, respirator etc.) are issued regularly. Workmen Inspectors are also appointed for effective implementation of safety rules & regulations. Each mine is having safety & training Dept. headed by qualified engineers & such safety & training activity is monitored at Head Office level by G.M. who reports to Managing Director.
Regular Safety Committee meetings are held at all the mines under the Chairmanship of Mines Manager, to review the status of implementations of statute and provide a safe & healthy working environment to the workers. Annual safety week is organized under the guidance of DGMS (Director General of Mines Safety) in competitive manner & the most safe mines workers, safety suggestions, slogans, posters are rewarded. In addition, regular seminar on safety are held & engineers / workers are sent for specific training to various mines of India & educational Institutes.
Finally to create a consciousness & to implement the safety rules & regulations a Tripartite Meeting is held once every year represented by the management / Director General of Mines safety / unions of GMDC. The Company is putting efforts for a zero accident rate and so far our performance in this area and environment protection is very much encouraging, maintaining a high productivity.
