In the early 60s, the newly-created state of Gujarat needed to ensure its industrial development. The forward-thinking and visionary approach of the leadership at that time, led to two things: The focus on the exploration of Gujarat’s abundant mineral deposits and the incorporation of Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC).
GMDC has an important mandate to develop the major mineral resources of the state. From its challenging beginnings involving the crushing and screening of silica sand required by the glass industry, GMDC is today acknowledged as one of India’s premier mining organisations.
A zero-debt company, GMDC was ranked 132nd among India’s Fortune 500 companies and among the top five organisations in the mining sector. GMDC has successfully diversified into thermal, wind, and solar power generation.
Gujarat is blessed with deposits of important minerals
Minerals like bauxite, fluorspar, manganese, silica sand, limestone, bentonite, and ball clay abound here. They find application in diverse industries - bauxite is mainly used to extract aluminium; limestone, a form of calcium carbonate, is used to manufacture cement. Other important uses of minerals range from manufacturing of hydrofluoric acid, hardening steel, and prevention of its rusting to purifying water, manufacturing glass and ceramic ware, aiding in oil drilling and more.
Lignite, generally yellow to dark brown in colour, is regarded as brown coal. It is a major source for producing power and electricity.
GMDC is aware of its responsibilities towards creating a better environment and power stations have been planned and designed accordingly. A 100-metre green belt surrounds the entire site. And the CFBC boiler used here is environment-friendly, controlling the sulphur in the flue gas emission.
