GMDC EXPANDS ITS OPERATIONS BEYOND THE STATE

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Limited (GMDC) is a leading PSU of Gujarat State. It is country’s largest merchant seller of Lignite and has interests in many other minerals such as bauxite and manganese among others. Of late, it has forayed into power generation and its first 250 MW power station in Kutch is expected to be fully operational by November 2006.

Ministry of Coal, Government of India has allotted to GMDC coal blocks with approximately 350 million tonnes of mineable reserves in Morga-II block of Korba district in the State of Chhatisgarh and another one in Jainnagar, Hazaribaug district in the State of Jharkhand with 100 million tonnes of mineable reserves. The coal deposits in the Morga block can fuel a 1000 MW Captive Power Plant while the Jainnagar Coal block can support a 250 MW Power Plant. Negotiations are on with prospective joint venture partners to set up power stations using indigenous coal.
