Technological Touch to Mining

Shri Arunkumar Solanki, IAS Absorbing new technologies has been in the genes of GMDC since its inception in the year 1963. Commemorating the 55th Foundation Day of GMDC on 15th May, 2018, it was a sense of pride and achievement for entire GMDC. Recently, GMDC published her fantastic audited financial results for the year 2017-18. And it has been a golden journey of more than five decades so far. Committed to embracing newer technological avenues for the betterment of her stakeholders, on this we at GMDC launched a new mobile application for our employees and our customers. These applications provide seamless interaction with GMDC’s HR and Sales systems respectively. I am sure these offerings will pave a new way of functioning for both GMDC and her stakeholders.

As part of her holistic developmental mandate, GMDC runs schools in some of the remotest regions of State of Gujarat. SKV Vidhyalaya at Panandhro Lignite mines is one of the leading schools of Kutch District. This school has been feeding to the educational needs of this desert region for many years now. Along with the launch of mobile applications, GMDC also dedicated a newly developed website of this school and thus paved the way for the students, teachers and other stakeholders for a borderless and seamless interactive medium through this website.

I congratulate the entire IT team of GMDC for their various achievements in the field of IT and IT enable Services for making GMDC functioning all the more efficient, fast and effective.

In this journey of 55 years, GMDC has been watered by hardwork of many committed officers and employees alike. On this occasion, it is also a privilege to salute the spirit of all these hard working man and women of the past and the present.

Arunkumar Solanki, IAS
Managing Director

As we come to close of the financial year of 2017-18, it is time to reflect and review the year that has gone by. When we began the fiscal 17-18, lot of challenges awaited GMDC. However, it gives me immense pleasure to acknowledge the hard and passionate work put in by all the Officers, Employees and all the stakeholders of GMDC which enabled us to overcome the challenges one by one. On every front, GMDC’s people exhibited immense work-will and cohesive actions. This was very well reflected in our unaudited financial results published for the 9 month period ended on December, 2017. Not only this, our achievements have also received national recognition at various forums.

Being in mining industry for decades now, Safety of workers and stakeholders always takes priority over everything else. GMDC’s Mining Safety practices have been nationally recognized and GMDC won National Mines Safety Award for Panandhro Lignite Mines (Year 2013), Amod (Rajpardi) Lignite Mines (Year 2014) and for Daban-Wamoti (Gadhsisa) Bauxite Mines (Year 2014). GMDC’s urge for excellence takes it to newer heights year by year. Recently, GMDC’s four Bauxite Mines, namely Ratadia-Nagrecha, Daban-Wamoti, Wandh 1 and Guniyasar Bauxite Mines, have received Five Star Rating by Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India.

Similarly for our Akrimota Power Plant, we have received national level runner up award by Mission Energy Foundation New Delhi in the category of Efficient Management of Fly Ash for TPP of less than 500 MW.

During the year, we also focused on our CSR front. We expanded our reach to the communities with which we work very closely and attempt to bring the fruits of development to the grass root level

As we gear up for financial year closing activities, I wish everyone at GMDC and to all those who are associated with GMDC, ALL THE VERY BEST for the coming new financial year.

The New Financial Year is inviting us with newer opportunities, newer hopes and newer avenues.

It is that time of the year again when every one becomes busy with dusting the old memoirs, homes and offices. Memories take us to those by lanes of our lives at this time. This is the time of Deepawali. The time of celebration, joy and merriment when each one of us is looking forward of spending good times with family and friends. Diwali marks a major mile stone of festive celebration in Indian Calendar. The entire nation is soaked with festivities. Nooks and corners of the villages, towns and cities are smiling and inviting us to join in this over all festive celebration. Diwali brings in new hopes, new thoughts and new vistas. The New Year marks the beginning of, once again, a new life with a new meaning.

The colourful Rangolis with their myriad designs and colours remind us the intricate colours of life. The small Diyas lighting up the homes remind us that we also need to be like that little lamp which burns the self but gives light to others. Light overcomes the darkness. These little lamps give us a challenge : Can we be a lamp for some one ? Can we enlighten some one’s life ? Diwali brings us the moment of joy, the joy of giving and sharing the goodness with each other. As we continue our journey of life, let us resolve to light the lamp of self realization, wisdom and enlightenment.

At GMDC, in the year gone by, we collectively worked hard, worked sincerely and worked as a team for the betterment of the company and for the betterment of the country. GMDC has already announced its Q1 results for the current fiscal of 2017-18Total revenue from operations stood at Rs. 583 crore which was 42% higher than its comparative quarter of previous financial year. Profit After tax was booked at Rs. 143 crore which was 24% higher than its corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. There was an overall improvement in various segments of its operations. GMDC has been continuously and seamlessly supplying the fuel to the industry in the state and thus has been partaking in the continuous development of the state economy.

It was a moment of pride for GMDC once again as her excellence in Safety and Safe Mining Practices was recognized as national level. GMDC has been awarded National Mines Safety Awards for its different lignite and bauxite mines in various categories. GMDC is committed towards better safety of its employees and is continuously pursuing several safety measures and initiatives apart from compliances of statutory requirements.

Every one of us, from bottom to top, contributed to the stupendous performance. The team consisted of not only our officers and staff, but also of their family members. As we were busy working at our offices and mines, our families stood as the back bone supporting and complimenting our efforts. This gives us all the more reason to collectively celebrate the Diwali and New Year.

GMDC, a premier state mineral development PSU has charted a great developmental journey over its existence of more than five decades. Recently, it announced Q1 results for the current fiscal of 2016-17. The results cheered the investors. Profit After tax was booked at Rs. 115 crore which was 59% higher than its corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. There was an overall improvement in various segments of its operations. GMDC has been continuously and seamlessly supplying the fuel to the industry in the state and thus has been partaking in the continuous development of the state economy.

GMDC has been a place where excellence has always been rewarded not only internally but its talent has been recognized externally as well. I take this opportunity to congratulate both Shri Kulshrestha and Smt. Iyer for their astounding success in the field of finance.

As we grow in our journey of excellence, we also expand our horizons. Ministry of Coal, Govt. of India has allotted three lignite blocks, namely, Panandhro Extension in Kutch, Bharkandam in Kutch and Ghala in Surat Districts to your company for power generation and for general mining under the auction by competitive bidding of coal mines Rules. These new lignite blocks will pave a brighter future for GMDC. Collectively these three lignite blocks have estimated 34 Million tonnes of lignite reserves

GMDC has been striving for its outreach to various stakeholders of the society through its various initiatives. Notable initiatives are two International Centers of Excellence, namely, iCREATE and iCEM situated at a sprawling campus of 43 acres in the outskirts of Ahmedabad city. iCREATE aims at providing an entire ecosystem for the budding entrepreneurs, innovators and incubators. Similarly, iCEM promises to be one of its kind Center in India for Mining Education, Skill Development and Research and Development in the field of mining. Both these Centers are on the verge of completion and will be operational soon.

I am hopeful that the persistent progressive performance of GMDC will continue even during the current financial year.

Kutch district is one of the most remote districts of the State and any economic activity in this area would greatly benefit the local population. At a time that the Govt of India is trying to kickstart the economy by actively promoting industrial investments, these projects would be most timely.
